The 13th edition of Festival of Ancient Heritage

The XIII-th edition of the Festival of Ancient Heritage "Eagle on the Danube" will be held from 2 to 4 June 2017 and it will involved more than 260 reenactors from Italy, Germany, Romania and Bulgaria. The Festival is hosted by the Municipality of Svishtov and groups for historical re-enactments "Legio I Italica" and "Cohors I Thrachum c.R." at the Council of Tourism - Svishtov.

Among the groups that will participate in the XIII Festival are: the most influential group for ancient historical restorations in Europe, Gruppo Storico Romano from Rome, Italy; the attractive Romanian groups for recreation "Camp Virtus", Danais Association and the dancers from Ninfe Dacie. The virtuoso riders of Bagatur and the unique fire show the Phoenix group from Kozloduy this year again will stand by the hosts - the Svishtov reenactors of the First Italian Legion, to present the best of the Bulgarian reenactment on the Svishtov stage. The program features well-established events such as the great battle of Romans and barbarians, antique dances, virtuoso horse riding demonstrations, a parade on the streets of Svishtov, and also some new additions. On the stage of Novae, the popular culinary expert and TV host Petar Mihalchev is expected to hold a master class with Svishtov students and to jury the culinary battle between the participating historical groups, which will end with a mass tasting by the audience.

Organizers of the event are the Municipality of Svishtov, Museum of History - Svishtov and Council of Tourism - Svishtov. During the festival, the Mayor of Svishtov will award the traditional awards "Eagle on the Danube". The Golden Eagle's Laureate for the Protection of the Cultural and Historical Heritage is one of the most prominent Bulgarian Thracian tracheologists and specialists in Thracian archeology Prof. Diana Gergova. The Golden Eagle's laureate for popularizing Bulgarian culture is the sculptor and politician Vezhdi Rashidov.

  • 10:00 - 14:00 - Morning show: Gladiatorial fights, Roman cuisine, rituals, crafts. Ancient culinary cuisine - culinary presentation of CHEF Petar Mihalchev and students from Svishtov. Culinary competition on authentic ancient cuisine between reenactment groups with cooking and presenting meals to the jury of historians, gastronomes and chefs.

  • 18:30 - 19:00 - Eagle on the Danube Award for the promotion of Bulgarian cultural heritage to Mr. Vezhdi Rashidov, overture - the virtuoso performances of Bagatur and Pagane.

  • 19:00 - 20:00 - Performances of the groups. Special participation of the world-famous musician Theodosii Spassov and the folk dance ensemble "The Creator", Svishtov.

  • After 20:00 - The Grand Battle: First Dacian War of Trajan. The first Dacian war was prepared as early as the first months after Trajan's arrival. The campaign is being conducted to restore the authority of Rome after Domitian's damage. The fighting began in 101 AD, when the legions invaded the Danube, advanced decisively, and headed for the main fortress of Sarmizeget. The Dacian leader was forced to surrender and accept the conditions of Rome: to return all escaped slaves and deserters, to hand over siege machines and a certain amount of weapons, to destroy the fortifications on the Danube, and to accept Roman garrisons.
